Large-scale abstract painter. One edition of every work: the original.

About the work

Yvonne Stevenson paints at one scale and in one edition: large, and once. Each canvas is a single original, 70 by 50 inches or larger, built up in acrylic, oil and pencil over weeks until the surface carries its own history. She has never allowed a print or reproduction of any work, and never will.

The work is made to hold a wall on its own terms. It reads clearly from across a room and rewards standing close, where the collage, the scraping back and the redrawn lines are all still visible.

About the artist

Stevenson's vocabulary was formed across the country rather than in one school. Years in California, Kentucky and Maryland left her with a painter's distrust of the tidy composition; her forms are collaged, scraped back and redrawn until they settle into something that is unmistakably hers. She works from a studio in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on the Mississippi.

She is also a mother who raised two sons alone, and an advocate for people who are rarely handed a microphone. That conviction is in the work: it is direct, unhedged and made without a safety net.

Studio visits in La Crosse by appointment. Video walkthroughs of any work on request.
